I never thought I would love online teaching, but I do!

Computer technology used to make my head swim and put my heart in my throat. Now, I breathe.
Not long ago, I would read a page describing how I was supposed to embed my domain name to my RSS feed in 3 easy steps, and I would start to panic and worry that I was about to create a worldwide technological disaster with just a few wrong keystrokes. While this is still an area of BIG learning for me, I am now treating my computer time as an exercise in mindfulness. I breathe, I slow down and I try to carefully read each word, instead of letting my eyes glaze over. I ask questions, and I do research, instead of becoming impatient and hitting keys at random, hoping for the best. I still have to keep reminding myself to feel my breath and to slow down everytime the swirling circle of limbo freezes me out of my increasingly larger online life, but I am getting better at navigating this strange virtual world.

I used to think that the personal connection would be lost by teaching online. Now, I am hooked.
I have become used to moving my computer from the floor, to the desk, to the couch, and back to the floor again in order to be able to see my students, and vice versa. AND, I actually feel closer to them. Because we are both in the comfort of our own homes, we can be more relaxed with each other, and move with even more confidence. I have learned that the personal connection is more than just being in the same place at the same time, it is sharing in the same goals and sharing in the same experience.

I REALLY like the accessibility of being able to have us both train at home!
Even if my students don’t live in urban centers where they can train in person, or if they are not able to drive, or even if they have a hard time navigating stairs and uneven sidewalks, we can still have a great time together, move, get stronger, more flexible, and feel more vital. Being out of town or away on vacation is no longer a reason to stop connecting to your body and waking up its vibrancy and inner strength. AND because many of the online platforms allow us to record the sessions, my students have their home programs at their fingertips whenever they want. I am truly shocked at how easy it is becoming for everyone to be able to make activity and personal, professional guidance work into their lifestyle and schedule.

I have always said that I love learning, so here is my opportunity!! So far, I am learning a TON. My brain is tired at the end of the day, but it’s worth it. The benefits of teaching online exercise are clear to me. I used to be very intimidated and uncomfortable everytime I opened my computer, but now that I see how it allows me to do more of what I love, I am a convert.
